Airlie Beach and The Whitsundays, Queensland

I recently spent four days at Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Coast in Queensland.  The Whitsunday Islands  are one of the many gateways to The Great Barrier Reef . Tim and I stayed at The Boathouse Apartments at Port of Airlie.  These apartments are relatively new (~6 months old):    The locals liken the external appearance of The Boathouse to a jail, but inside they are fabulous.  This is the view of the marina from our balcony: It was hard work having breakfast every day looking at this view, but someone's got to do it ;)  The Boathouse is situated just a 5 minute walk from town, and unlike some of the resorts at Airlie Beach, it is situated on the flat, so there are no steep hills to get to town. Holiday in the South Island of New Zealand - Dec 07/Jan 08

Aahhh, holidays! Cakelaw set off for Christmas holidays in the South Island of New Zealand with her mother and brother in late December. However, it was a very bumpy start. Our flight to Christchurch as delayed for 6 hours, and until the 11th hour, we were not given any promises that the plane would be leaving at all that night. The general malaise and despair among my fellow passengers can be clearly seen in the following photograph: However, our 5.30pm flight finally left Brisbane Airport at 11.30pm, and we arrived in Christchurch the next morning at around 6am (NZ time). Below is a photo of the welcome sign in the international terminal of Christchurch airport, listing Christchurch's sister cities around the world: Our "home" in Christchurch was the Holiday Inn on Avon in Oxford Terrace. Blue Mountains NSW, Australia - Part 1

If you watch the news at all, wherever you may be in the world, you will know that Australia is in the middle of  devastating bushfire season.  Australia suffers bushfires at least somewhere every year, but this year is different because of the number of locations  and sheer size of the areas affected.  It will take years (if ever) for the affected areas to fully recover.  Many people and animals have lost their lives, many more have been severely injured or lost everything they owned. There are also knock-on effects beyond the affected regions, including economic impact and the effects of smoke pollution.  New South Wales is one of the states badly hit by bushfires, from the north to the south.  In the first week of November 2019, I spent a lovely week travelling through various regions of New South Wales, at least some of which will now have been burnt out.
